SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 1995--MARKER INTERNATIONAL of Salt Lake City and DNR SPORTSYSTEM of Feldmeilen, Switzerland, Wednesday announced that they have begun construction of a new 45,000-square-foot snowboard- manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City. MARKER and DNR have agreed to form a new company that will own and operate the facility. DNR SPORTSYSTEM, a world leader in the development, marketing and distribution of snowboards, snowboard boots and snowboard bindings, will be a major shareholder. MARKER INTERNATIONAL will control the new entity with a majority of the shares. The snowboard facility will be situated on 5 acres of land to be owned by the new company. It is located adjacent to MARKER INTERNATIONAL's new headquarters, which was completed in June 1994 at 2300 South and 1070 West in Salt Lake City. The cost for the first phase of the facility is expected to exceed $10 million. Production is scheduled to begin in September 1996 with new, state-of-the-art manufacturing machinery, some of which is proprietary technology developed by Volkl in Germany. The first phase of the facility is designed to allow for production of more than 200,000 snowboards annually. DNR SPORTSYSTEM will have the primary responsibility for the design and development of the snowboards produced by the new facility. The snowboards will be marketed through DNR's international distribution network. The facility will also be the location of the new DNR Snowboard Technology Center. The center will focus on the areas of advanced research and development in snowboard technologies, boot/board interface and product-testing procedures. The testing facility will offer its services to the industry in order to assist in the development of standards and practices. In commenting on the announcement, DNR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lucio Roffi said: ``As a leader in the snowboard industry, it is necessary for DNR to control the production of its products. This U.S. facility will provide DNR with an additional source of production to complement the exclusive snowboard- manufacturing agreement we now have with Volkl. ``Salt Lake City is an ideal location for snowboard production. Utah is the site of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and the Wasatch Mountains provide an excellent location for research and development and on-snow testing.'' MARKER Chairman and CEO Hank Tauber said: ``This is an exciting opportunity for MARKER to enter the snowboard industry as a manufacturer in partnership with DNR. ``This production and technology facility will enable us to develop and pursue new technologies and to deliver a high-quality product combined with the professional service that the retailer has come to expect from MARKER and DNR.''
