By Kurt Repanshek, The Salt Lake Tribune Knight-Ridder/Tribune Business News PARK CITY, Utah--Aug. 16--POWDR Corp., launched in 1994 by Salt Lake City entrepreneur Ian Cumming to facilitate his move into the ski industry with the purchase of the Park City Ski Area and California's Alpine Meadows, has added two smaller resorts to its portfolio. The Boreal and Soda Springs ski areas, small day-use areas just off Interstate 80 near Truckee, Calif., were acquired last week through a stock purchase, corporate officials said Tuesday. The purchase price was not disclosed. Although paling in size to Park City with its 2,200 acres of skiable terrain and Alpine Meadows with 2,000 acres, Boreal at 300 acres and Soda Springs with 150 acres are considered valuable because of their proximity to Sacramento, about 100 miles to the west. "These areas are very different, catering to a different skier market than either Alpine or Park City," said Werner Schuster, executive vice president of POWDR Corp. Boreal also will give POWDR Corp. some experience with snowboarders, who currently are not allowed at either the Park City or Alpine Meadows resorts. "Boreal's high base elevation and established snowmaking system will give us an advantage early in the season," POWDR Corp. President John Cumming, Ian's son, said in a news release. Boreal, which counts two quads among its nine chairlifts, attracted roughly 200,000 skiers last winter, while Soda Springs, which has two double chairs, lured between 20,000 and 30,000 skiers with its weekend operations, said Schuster. Both areas have vertical drops of roughly 500 feet. END!A7?ST-POWDR-SKI
